Fellowship Application Information

150x150 images: img1.jpgThe next cycle of CHS Fellowships in Ancient Greek Studies will be for the academic year September 2009- May 2010 (or for Fellows with school-age children, to the end of the school year in June). Applicants who are unable to stay for the full academic year may apply for a one-semester fellowship; they should include with their application a note explaining the circumstances that make this necessary. An average of twelve Fellowships are granted each academic year.

The new online application is now available! To apply online, or to submit a recommendation letter for an applicant, you can do so here. Please note that you will leave the CHS web site.

The Fellowship includes a stipend and free housing for the Fellows and their families, subsidized health insurance, and other benefits. The stipend (maximum $26,000) is adjusted for individual circumstances, such as the number of dependents accompanying the Fellow and the amount of support from other sources. Additional support (up to $1000) is available for professional travel and other research expenses. The Center will also assist with Fellows' travel expenses to and from Washington.

Prerequisites for the Fellowships are a Ph.D. degree (or its equivalent) and professional competence in ancient Greek studies as documented by published work. The principal requirement of the application is a detailed research proposal (no more than three pages).

Criteria Used in the Awarding of Fellowships:

  1. The purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage and support scholarship of the highest quality on various aspects of ancient Greek civilization. Appropriate fields of research include archaeology, art history, epigraphy, history, literary criticism, philology, philosophy, and interdisciplinary research.
  2. Fellows will be selected on the basis of: (i) scholarly promise as indicated by the applicant's academic record, prior publications, and supporting letters; and (ii) the merits of the proposed research project. (Projects that consist largely of revising the doctoral dissertation are unlikely to be competitive.)
  3. Preference will be given to applicants who are at an early stage of their professional careers (typically, at least three years beyond the receipt of the Ph.D. but not yet tenured);
  4. The Center supports affirmative action and equal opportunity in the selection of fellows.

Important Announcement: Applications for the 09-10 academic year will be online only! We will no longer accept paper applications or recommendation letters. The online application is now live!
