Harvard Summer Program in Nafplio and Thessaloniki, Greece
Program Dates: June 27–August 2, 2020
The five-week-long Comparative Cultural Studies Program is the oldest and one of the most successful Harvard study-abroad programs, implemented by CHS in Greece. Divided between the seaside town of Nafplio and the historical city of Thessaloniki, the program will be celebrating its nineteenth year in summer 2020. Led by Harvard Professors Dimiter Angelov and Gregory Nagy and a founding team of Harvard-trained Senior Fellows, the program seeks to promote cross-cultural understanding by exploring some of the major cultural traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean –and, more broadly, the world we live in–, their points of overlap, mutual influence, and strategic divergence.
Since the summer of 2002, when it was launched, a total of over 320 students from the four corners of the world have come to Greece, for an intensive five-week course on comparative cultural studies. The Harvard Summer Program in Nafplio and Thessaloniki, Greece is fundamentally interdisciplinary, combining historical, literary, philosophical, and linguistic approaches to cultural exchange. The pedagogical model is interactive and research-driven, with several faculty members and students exchanging ideas around the seminar table, making it a real laboratory for comparative and collaborative thinking. The program’s cross-cultural focus is matched by the diversity of its participants.
The generous support from the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington enables the program to further enhance the diversity of its student body through competitive scholarships. Moreover, CHS offers research fellowships to Greek Universities’ junior faculty members and scientific and laboratory teaching staff enabling them to participate in the program and present their research. The fellows also meet and interact with colleagues and students from the US and all around the world, while the team exchanges experiences and ideas about their different educational systems. For further information about this fellowship program, please visit CHS – CCS Fellowships.
Since 2008, the program has benefited from the facilities and resources of the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies in Nafplio, as well. Seminars and workshops take place at the Center’s Iatrou Building, which also provides access to Harvard’s electronic resources and a burgeoning library. CHS in Greece supports administratively and logistically the program, while various private and public institutions have also provided generous support. Strong academic links, through the establishment of guest lectureships and student scholarships, have been forged with Patras University and Fudan University, in Shanghai, and Peking University, in Beijing.
The application for this program opens in early December and the deadline is January 30, 2020. Please visit the website of the Harvard Summer Program in Nafplio and Thessaloniki (Greece) for the application form and learn more.
