The Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) offers up to five fellowships to postdoctoral researchers based in Greece and Cyprus. The program aims to support researchers whose work requires continued access to material on site (e.g. archives, artifacts, archaeological sites) and to encourage research of the highest quality on topics related to ancient Greek civilization. The fellowships are offered by the CHS in Washington, DC, and supported administratively and logistically by the CHS in Greece.
All fellows receive appointments for one year, beginning on June 1, 2024, and will receive access to the electronic resources of the Harvard library system for the duration of their fellowship.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to visit the CHS offices in Nafplio, for up to 5 days, and in Washington, DC, for up to 10 days.
The fellowship award includes a stipend of $12,000 (USD), which may be used at the discretion of the fellow to support their research and the execution of the project. Additionally, the CHS will cover limited travel expenses (airfare and accommodations) for each fellow’s visit to Nafplio and to Washington, DC.
Eligibility
Prerequisites for fellowships are a PhD degree (or its equivalent). Applicants must have defended their degree before July 1, 2023.
Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of Greece or Cyprus, and will reside there during the fellowship in order to conduct the research outlined in their application.
Applicants may not apply to other CHS related fellowship programs, such as the Fellowships in Hellenic Studies Program in Washington, DC, during the same application cycle.

Dissemination of Outcomes and Acknowledgement of Support
Fellows are encouraged to document the evolution of their projects and share their work in progress. All fellows are asked to submit a profile for publication on the CHS website, and complete a survey at the end of their appointment. Beyond that, fellows are welcome to contribute one piece of content for publication in the CHS Research Bulletin; options include recording a podcast episode in dialogue with the Director or a Senior Fellow, or writing an essay or blog entry.
The CHS asks fellows to acknowledge the support they receive for their research in publications or presentations resulting from their work at the Center.
Criteria Used in the Awarding of Fellowships
The CHS will only fund proposals that
- Outline clearly and in detail a research project that contributes to scholarship in Classical studies or the humanities in general;
- Demonstrate the capability of the researcher(s) to carry out the project: for example, through prior publications and letters of support;
- Explain the importance of a CHS fellowship to the progress of the project.
Application Information
The deadline for submitting applications is Sunday, October 15, 2023 at midnight (Eastern). Recommendation letters are due no later than Sunday, October 22, 2023.
As part of the application process, applicants will upload three documents in PDF format:
- A detailed research proposal of no more than 1,000 words. Bibliographies and references do not count toward the word limit.
- A curriculum vitae documenting qualifications to conduct the proposed research.
- A sample of published or forthcoming work of no more than 10,000 words. Bibliographies and references do not count toward the word limit.
Applicants will also provide the names and contact information for three references. Applicants should confirm the availability of their referees in advance. The CHS application system will solicit letters from referees only after an applicant has submitted an application.
Notification of the selection committee’s decision will be sent to applicants in February, 2024.
