Dr. Tao Guo is Assistant Professor in ancient Greek history at Southwest University, China. As a CHS visiting researcher, he will be at the Center for the academic year (September 2019-September 2020). Dr. Guo earned his PhD degree in ancient Greek history from Fudan University (2008-2014, including one year in a joint program with the Department of Classics, UC Berkeley).
His research interests focus on Herodotus, early Greek prose, and Greek historiography. He is currently working on the research project “A New Historicist Study of Herodotus’ Histories”, which is sponsored by the National Social Science Foundation of China. His recent publications include papers on Herodotus’ Histories, the presentation and understanding of Egypt in Greek culture, as well as the world view of Greeks.
While at the CHS, Dr. Guo will carry out his research project on Herodotus’ Histories, which is mainly but not exclusively based on Book Two. He aims to illustrate the interaction between the Herodotean narrative on Egyptian civilization and its Greek social, intellectual, and political contexts. The research will form chapters of a book, which is expected to be published before 2023.
