About the Exhibition
Christina Lappa’s “Echoes of 1821: Greek Heroes and Heroines” exhibition pays tribute to the heroes of the Greek War of Independence, with a special focus on the often-overlooked contributions of women. Displayed at the Greek Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Greek Consulate in New York City, the collection was inspired by the 12 bronze medals engraved in 1836 by Austrian engraver Konrad Lange and exhibited at the Numismatic Museum in Athens during the bicentennial celebration of Greek independence in 2021.
Lappa, a Greek diaspora artist born in Maturin, Venezuela, to Greek parents from Epirus, living in Greece, brings a personal perspective, emphasizing the duality of Greek identity across cultures. Noticing the absence of women in historical commemorations, she highlighted two key heroines—Laskarina Bouboulina, an honorary Admiral of the Russian Army, and Manto Mavrogenous, an honorary General —who played pivotal roles as military leaders and financiers of the revolution.Lappa’s portrayal modernizes these figures, such as depicting Bouboulina in traditional attire with contemporary high heels, symbolizing the ever-enduring strength of Greek womanhood.
Her thirteen vibrant paintings elevate these historical personalities of the War of Independence into timeless icons and legends. Through this exhibition, Lappa underscores that the spirit of 1821 lives on, inspiring both Greeks and the diaspora to uphold the values of independence, freedom, and democracy, all synonymous with the name of Greece.
