CHS Visiting Scholar | Rhodes Pinto, PHD in Classics at the University of Cambridge

PintoThis week, Dr. Rhodes Pinto, Postgraduate in Classics at the University of Cambridge, will be staying at the CHS and using the library. CurrentlyDr. Pinto works on issues of physics, metaphysics, cosmology, psychology, and theology within ancient Greek and Roman philosophy. He is particularly interested in motion, a topic that cuts across all of these areas, and is in the process of writing a book on the treatment of motion in Presocratic philosophy. While at the CHS, Dr. Pinto will be carrying out research on several of his projects, including an article on the Stoic theory of lunar light and an article on what the terminology and linguistic conventions for “to move” and “to change” in Greek and Latin philosophy reveal about the conceptualisation of motion and change.
While at the CHS, Dr. Pinto is also is looking forward to collaborating with Dr. Stravros Kouloumentas on his upcoming edition of the evidence relating to the Presocratic philosopher Alcmaeon of Croton. He also looks forward to discussing his project with our fellows of like-minded scholastic pursuit.
Dr. Pinto is visiting under a grant, awarded to scholars around the world that could benefit from access to the Center’s library resources and from consulting and working with fellows on a short-term basis. The CHS is currently accepting applications for visits from January 27th to May 29th, 2016. To learn more, visit the CHS website.
