The burden of modernity: Kazantzakis’ insights and their relevance in today’s world
The lecture explores aspects of the philosophical thought of Nikos Kazantzakis. Kazantzakis reflected upon a series of monumental transformations which took place during his time: the decline of empires and the rise of nations states; the development of a modern economy and the destruction of traditional ways of life; the contestation of traditional religion; and the birth of philosophical currents such as existentialism. Kazantzakis tried to understand the new world that was emerging, combining insights from Western philosophy with a genuine study of Cretan popular culture. This allowed him to formulate a series of philosophical and cultural proposals that are as relevant today as there were then.
The event will take place at The Embassy of Greece, 2217 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008.
