“Hesiod: A modern poet for the times”
Lecturer: Alicia Stallings, MacArthur Fellow and Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Respondent: Stephanie Larson, Associate Professor of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, and Co-Director of the Thebes Ismenion Synergasia Excavation Project, Bucknell University
The lecture will be held in the “Nikos Mazarakis Family” Lecture Hall at the Center for Hellenic Studies, Nafplio, and will be delivered in English.
Synopsis of the lecture
A. E. Stallings, poet, critic, and verse translator, will discuss and read from her new verse translation of Hesiod’s Works and Days, focusing on the experience of translating Hesiod (a poet deeply concerned with justice, work, debt, and hard times) in Greece during the Greek financial meltdown. She is also interested in Hesiod as an original thinker, the Works and Days as unique in the canon with its quirky mixture of the cosmic and the personal, and in Boeotia not as cultural backwater, but as central to the Greek imagination.
Alicia Stallings’s brief resume
A. E. Stallings is an American poet who has lived in Athens since 1999. She studied Classics at the University of Georgia and at Oxford University. She is the author of three collections of poetry, most recently, Olives, and has published a verse translation of Lucretius, The Nature of Things, with Penguin Classics. A Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow, she is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her translation of Works and Days is also forthcoming with Penguin Classics in July.
Stephanie Larson’s brief resume
Stephanie Larson focuses in her scholarship primarily on ancient Boiotia (Tales of Epic Ancestry, 2007 and numerous articles) but has also published on the Odyssey, Sappho, and Herodotus. She co-directs the excavations in Thebes, Greece, at the Ismenion hill, where she is currently working on the final publication of that multi-period site. In addition, she is particularly interested in Hesiod and Pindar.

Η A. E. Stallings, ποιήτρια, κριτικός και μεταφράστρια ποίησης, θα διαβάσει αποσπάσματα από την πρόσφατη μετάφρασή της, των Έργων και Ημερών του Ησιόδου, ανατρέχοντας στην εμπειρία που βίωσε μεταφράζοντας τον Ησίοδο στην Ελλάδα κατά τη διάρκεια της χρηματοοικονομικής κατάρρευσης. (Ο αρχαίος αυτός ποιητής απασχολήθηκε σοβαρά με θέματα όπως η δικαιοσύνη, η εργασία, το χρέος και οι χαλεποί καιροί.) Τα ενδιαφέροντά της εστιάζονται στον Ησίοδο ως πρωτότυπο στοχαστή, στη μοναδικότητα των Έργων και Ημερών στον ποιητικό κανόνα με τον ιδιόμορφο συγκερασμό του συμπαντικού και του προσωπικού, και στη Βοιωτία όχι ως πολιτισμικό τέλμα, αλλά ως τόπο κεντρικής σημασίας για την ελληνική φαντασία.

Η A. E. Stallings είναι αμερικανίδα ποιήτρια η οποία ζει στην Αθήνα από το 1999. Σπούδασε Κλασική Φιλολογία στα Πανεπιστήμια της Georgia και της Oξφόρδης. Έχει συγγράψει τρεις συλλογές ποίησης, με πιο πρόσφατη τη συλλογή Olives και έχει εκδώσει μετάφραση του Λουκρητίου, The Nature of Things, στον εκδοτικό οίκο Penguin Classics. Υπότροφος των Ιδρυμάτων Guggenheim και MacArthur, είναι επίσης μέλος της Αμερικανικής Ακαδημίας Τεχνών και Επιστημών. Η μετάφρασή της των Έργων και Ημερών θα εκδοθεί τον Ιούλιο από τον οίκο Penguin Classics.
