“Tragedy as a universal good in the Greco-Roman world”

The event will take place at the the Auditorium of the Cultural Center of Ligourio. The lecture will be delivered in Greek.
The Events Series 2016 is organized in cooperation with the Municipalities of Nafplion, Argos – Mycenae, Ermionida and Epidaurus.
Synopsis of the lecture
What is the impact of tragedy beyond the borders of Attica after the 5th century BC? How does it become prominent as a universal cultural asset for the Greco-Roman world and how are the conditions for its survival and reception created? The lecture attempts to explore the spread of tragedy throughout the then Greek-speaking world, as evidenced by the revival of tragic works, the rich pictorial evidence for the ancient performance, and the key role of tragic poetry in the Hellenistic period’s education. The cultural value and formative influence of the ancient Greek tragedy is further demonstrated by its reception in the Roman dramaturgic composition.
Ioanna Karamanou’s brief resume
Ioanna Karamanou, Assistant Professor of Ancient Greek Tragedy in the Department of Theater Studies, University of the Peloponnese, studied at the University of Cambridge and London (UCL). She is the author of the book Euripides: Danae and Dictys (De Gruyter, Berlin-New York 2006) and Euripides: Alexandros (forthcoming in 2016), and has edited the collective volume Homeric Receptions across Generic and Cultural Contexts (De Gruyter, Berlin-New York 2016). She has carried out more than thirty scientific studies on ancient tragedy and its reception in international scientific journals and international collective volumes.

Σύντομη περίληψη της διάλεξης
Ποια η απήχηση της τραγωδίας πέραν των συνόρων της Αττικής μετά τον 5ο αιώνα π.Χ.; Πώς αναδεικνύεται σε οικουμενικό πολιτισμικό αγαθό για τον ελληνορωμαϊκό κόσμο και πώς δημιουργούνται οι συνθήκες επιβίωσης και πρόσληψής της; Η ομιλία επιχειρεί να διερευνήσει την εξάπλωση της τραγωδίας σε όλον τον τότε ελληνόφωνο κόσμο, όπως προκύπτει από τις αναβιώσεις τραγικών έργων, τις πλούσιες εικονογραφικές μαρτυρίες για την αρχαία παράσταση, καθώς και από την καίρια θέση της τραγικής ποίησης στην παιδεία των ελληνιστικών χρόνων. Η πολιτισμική αξία και διαμορφωτική επίδραση της αρχαιοελληνικής τραγωδίας καταδεικνύεται περαιτέρω μέσω της πρόσληψής της στη ρωμαϊκή δραματουργία.
Βιογραφικό σημείωμα της Ιωάννας Καραμάνου
H Ιωάννα Καραμάνου, επίκουρη καθηγήτρια αρχαίας τραγωδίας του Τμήματος Θεατρικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου Πελοποννήσου, σπούδασε στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Cambridge και του Λονδίνου (UCL). Είναι συγγραφέας των βιβλίων Euripides: Danae and Dictys (De Gruyter, Βερολίνο-Νέα Υόρκη 2006) και Euripides: Alexandros (υπό έκδοση εντός του 2016), ενώ έχει επιμεληθεί τον συλλογικό τόμο Homeric Receptions across Generic and Cultural Contexts (De Gruyter, Βερολίνο-Νέα Υόρκη 2016). Έχει εκπονήσει περισσότερες από τριάντα επιστημονικές μελέτες για την αρχαία τραγωδία και την πρόσληψή της σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά και διεθνείς συλλογικούς τόμους.
