“Populism, political risk and economic policy in the Greek case”
Lecturer: Theodore Pelagidis, Economic Analysis Professor, Department of Maritime Studies, University of Piraeus & NR Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution, US
The lecture will be held in the “Nikos Mazarakis Family” Lecture Hall at the Center for Hellenic Studies, Nafplio, and will be delivered in Greek.
The event is organized in collaboration with the Harvard Club of Greece.
Synopsis of the lecture
The lecture highlights the following questions: How much was the assistance really received by Greece during the three programs? Where was this money directed? How can the partial failure of the programs be explained? To what extent can the current unfavorable situation be explained by a dysfunctional political system and the rise of the political extremism/populism? How can the sustainability of depth as well as that of any recovery be linked to the market policy risk?
Theodore Pelagidis’s brief resume
Theodore Pelagidis is Senior Fellow at Brookings Institution US, & economic analysis professor at the University of Piraeus. He has been Fulbright scholar at Columbia University, US & NBG professorial fellow at LSE. He has at least 50 publications in refereed international scholarly journals including: The Journal of Economic Policy Reform, The Journal of Policy Modelling, Cambridge Journal of Economics, International Review of Law and Economics, Journal of Economic Studies, European Journal of Law and Economics, etc. In Greece, he has authored 12 monographs. Internationally, he has co-authored with M. Mitsopoulos the following books: Understanding the Crisis in Greece. From Boom to Bust, MacMillan/Palgrave 2011 & 2012 (2nd edition), Greece, From Exit to Recovery? Brookings Institution Publ. 2014 and Who’s to Blame for Greece? MacMillan/Palgrave 2016. He has published articles in the Financial Times, e-CNN, e- NYT & The Guardian.

Η εισήγηση αναδεικνύει τα κάτωθι ερωτήματα: Πόση πραγματικά ήταν η βοήθεια που έλαβε η Ελλάδα κατά τη διάρκεια των τριών προγραμμάτων; Που κατευθύνθηκαν τα χρήματα αυτά; Πως μπορεί να εξηγηθεί η μερική αποτυχία των προγραμμάτων; Κατά πόσο η σημερινή δυσμενής κατάσταση μπορεί να εξηγηθεί από ένα δυσλειτουργικό πολιτικό σύστημα και την άνοδο του πολιτικού εξτρεμισμού/λαϊκισμού; Πώς η βιωσιμότητα του χρέους αλλά και της όποιας ανάκαμψης μπορεί να συνδεθεί με το ρίσκο της πολιτικής αγοράς;
Βιογραφικό σημείωμα του Θοδωρή Πελαγίδη
Ο Θοδωρής Πελαγίδης είναι Senior Fellow στο Brookings Institution US, & καθηγητής οικονομικής ανάλυσης στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πειραιώς. Έχει διατελέσει Fulbright scholar στο Columbia University, US & NBG professorial fellow στο LSE. Έχει τουλάχιστον 50 δημοσιεύσεις σε διεθνείς επιστημονικές επιθεωρήσεις με κριτές μεταξύ των οποίων: The Journal of Economic Policy Reform, The Journal of Policy Modelling, Cambridge Journal of Economics, International Review of Law and Economics, Journal of Economic Studies, European Journal of Law and Economics, etc. Στην Ελλάδα έχει συγγράψει 12 μονογραφίες.
