Εκδήλωση ΚΕΣ
Με χαρά σας προσκαλούμε την Τετάρτη 22 Ιανουαρίου, 2020, στις 19:00, στην εκδήλωση με θέμα:
«Flora Graeca: Η ανακάλυψη της ελληνικής φύσης από τους Ευρωπαίους»
Ομιλήτρια: Μαρία Γεωργοπούλου, Διευθύντρια Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης, Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα
Η εκδήλωση θα λάβει χώρα στην Αίθουσα Διαλέξεων «Οικογένειας Νίκου Μαζαράκη» του Κέντρου Ελληνικών Σπουδών Ελλάδος, Πανεπιστήμιο Harvard στο Ναύπλιο. Η ομιλία θα γίνει στα Ελληνικά και στη συνέχεια θα ακολουθήσει μικρή δεξίωση για την κοπή της βασιλόπιτας του ΚΕΣ για το 2020. Πέρας εκδήλωσης στις 21:30.

Σύντομη περίληψη της διάλεξης
Η σπάνια και πολύτιμη δεκάτομη έκδοση Flora Graeca του βρετανού John Sibthorp, που ολοκληρώθηκε στην Οξφόρδη το 1840, αποτελεί την κορύφωση του ενδιαφέροντος πολλών Δυτικοευρωπαίων επιστημόνων για την ελληνική χλωρίδα. Η ομιλία θα εστιάσει σε φυσιοδίφες – περιηγητές του 17ου και 18ου αιώνα που έθεσαν τις βάσεις για την βοτανική επιστήμη στον ελληνικό χώρο την εποχή του Διαφωτισμού.
Σύντομο βιογραφικό σημείωμα της κυρίας Μαρίας Γεωργοπούλου
Η Μαρία Γεωργοπούλου είναι ιστορικός τέχνης και τα επιστημονικά της ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται στις καλλιτεχνικές και πολιτισμικές αλληλεπιδράσεις των μεσογειακών λαών στον Μεσαίωνα. Κατέχει διδακτορικό τίτλο σπουδών από το Πανεπιστήμιο της California, στο Λος Άντζελες, και έχει διδάξει στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Yale (1992-2004) όπου ίδρυσε επίσης το πρόγραμμα ελληνικών σπουδών. Από το 2004 είναι διευθύντρια της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης της Αμερικανικής Σχολής Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα. Κατά τη διάρκεια της θητείας της, η Βιβλιοθήκη έχει αναπτύξει νέες ακαδημαϊκές δραστηριότητες και προγράμματα για να προσελκύσει ένα όλο και ευρύτερο κοινό.

“Flora Graeca: The Discovery of Greek Nature by the Europeans”
Speaker: Maria Georgopoulou, Director of the Gennadius Library, American School of Classical Studies at Athens
The event will be held at the “Nikos Mazarakis Family” Lecture Hall of the Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece, Harvard University. The lecture will be delivered in Greek and will be followed by a small reception for the cutting of the 2020 CHS Greece vasilopita. The event will last until 21:30.

Synopsis of the lecture
The rare and valuable ten-volume edition of British John Sibthorp’s Flora Graeca, completed in Oxford in 1840, is the culmination of many Western European scientists’ interest in Greek flora. The talk will focus on 17th and 18th century naturalists – travelers who laid the foundations for the botanical science in Greece at the time of the Enlightenment.
Maria Georgopoulou’s brief resume
Maria Georgopoulou was trained as an art historian and her scholarly work explores the artistic and cultural interactions of Mediterranean peoples in the Middle Ages. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles, and taught at Yale University (1992-2004), where she also founded the Program for Hellenic Studies. She is currently the Director of the Gennadius Library at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. During her tenure, the Gennadius Library has expanded its academic offerings and developed new outreach programs to attract and educate an ever-wider audience.
