CHS Visiting Scholar | Dr. Ifigeneia Giannadaki, Research Fellow at UCL and Teaching Fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London

This week, Dr. Ifigeneia Giannadaki, Research Fellow at UCL and Teaching Fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London, will be staying at the CHS and using the library. Currently, Giannadaki is working on completing her ongoing paper, titled “Meden aprobouleuton? Dem.22 and the management of the Ekklesia business”. This work attempts to reconstruct the controversial legal aspect of the Athenian democratic administration relating to probouleusis: the need for the introduction of a proposal to the Boule before it was passed to the Ekklesia, as illustrated by the speech of Demosthenes Against Androtion(Dem.22). While modern scholarship accepts that this was a fundamental feature of Athenian democratic administration, little attention has been directed towards the evidence which suggest that a proposal could be introduced directly to the Ekklesia. In some cases, Giannadaki argues, a proposal could be directly introduced to the Ekklesia, which would suggest a blatant violation of the law of probouleusis. Giannadaki’s paper both opens the door to these claims, and considers context and significance of non-proboulematic decrees in the general Athenian democratic administration.
While at the CHS, Dr. Giannadaki looks forward to having access to our library  and the exceptional resources, which she believes will help her to “produce a work of excellent academic standards.” She also anticipates engaging in many discussions with the Fellows at the Center, who are like-minded in intellectual pursuit.
Dr. Ifigeneia Giannadaki is visiting under a grant, awarded to researchers around the world that could benefit from access to the Center’s library resources and from consulting and working with fellows on a short-term basis.
