Τὰ ξένια: La cerimonia di ospitalità cittadina, by Angela Cinalli
The CHS Team is happy to share some exciting news from Angela Cinalli, CHS Fellow in Greek Epigraphy. Professor Cinalli has just published her latest book, Τὰ ξένια: La cerimonia di ospitalità cittadina (English translation, “Ta xenia: the ceremony of city hospitality.”) The book is an open access publication from Sapienza Università Editrice. In it, Angela Cinalli reconstructs the steps of the ceremony through which Greek cities used to welcome the foreigners into the community by using both literary and epigraphic evidence.
Professor Cinalli participated at the CHS Spring Research Symposium where fellows presented their work to an audience of senior fellows and classics faculty from the Washington, DC area. Her research entitled “Οὐ τὸ νικᾶν ἀλλὰ τὸ εὖ ἀγωνίζεσθαι: Playing to win or to show off? Itinerant artists performing in unconventional ἀγῶνες in some decrees from Delphi (third to first century BC)” is available at the CHS Research Bulletin.
Angela Cinalli has recently obtained her Ph.D. at “La Sapienza” University of Rome in Greek Epigraphy. She is currently developing her doctoral research project on the itinerant men of literacy and music (poeti vaganti) in the epigraphic sources of the Hellenistic Period through the post-doctoral fellowships at The Ohio State University (Fall 2013) and at the CHS. She is also a research collaborator for the Archaeological Missions of the University “G. D’Annunzio” of Chieti in Cyprus and Cyrenaica. Her forthcoming publications on funerary epigraphy of Cyrene include a chapter on painted and charcoal inscriptions (Brill ed.) and some articles on new inscriptions for the Libyan Studies. She is also publishing some excerpts of her research project (Seminari Romani di Cultura Greca). In collaboration with the IT staff of the CHS, Angela is developing the digital product of her research project on the poeti vaganti.
