Internship Funding Sources

Funding Sources for the CHS Summer Programs

The deadline for the Summer Internship Program 2009 is quickly approaching, and many of the application procedures have changed this year. There are now several different options for funding the internship program, and also for how you can spend your time in Greece.

Many of you have inquired about the budget portion of the CARAT cover sheet. We have created sample budget worksheets (attached here) that you can use to guide you through this part of the application. Which budget worksheet you use will depend on how you want to fund your internship, and how much time you wish to spend in Greece.

The two main funding options for the Summer Internship this year are CHS funding and Rockefeller funding. The CHS provides a limited number of scholarships for students who wish to participate in the 5 week internship program. A Rockefeller grant through Harvard University requires a student to spend at least 8 weeks abroad. For more information on the Rockefeller Grants click here .  Since the summer internship program funded by the CHS is only 5 weeks long, we have come up with several options that combine different CHS programs to achieve this 8 week minimum. The options are as follows:

CHS Funding:

1)You may apply for a scholarship from the CHS to fund your 5-week internship in Greece. The scholarship includes all program fees (including housing), plus a grant of $2,500 to cover some of the costs of airfare and travel. Scholarships will be based on merit, not by financial aid status. If you wish to apply for a CHS scholarship for the 5 week internship, you still have to complete a CARAT budget worksheet. Please use the attached budget template with your CARAT application. NOTE: You may also apply for an OIP Summer Grant to cover additional incidental expenses associated with your travel to Greece. See below for a link to the OIP Summer Grant page.

For this option, use this budget worksheet.

2) You may apply for a scholarship from the CHS to the Kenchreai Dig. The Kenchreai Dig scholarship covers the program fees (includes lodging and most meals), but not travel to Greece and incidentals. You may apply for an OIP summer grant (see below) to cover the cost of your airfare and incidentals. If you wish to apply for a CHS scholarship for the 5 week archaeological dig, you still have to complete a CARAT budget worksheet. Please use the attached budget template with your CARAT application.

For this option, use this budget worksheet .

Rockefeller Funding:

1) You may apply for an 8 week internship in Greece.

To do so you should complete the following application procedure: Complete the regular CHS application through CARAT. Use the budget template provided below with your application. Email the application to the CHS. Next, complete an application on CARAT for a Rockefeller International Experience Grant. You may use the same application and budget template for the CHS and the Rockefeller grant, but you must make sure to submit your application to both the CHS and the OIP. Once you are accepted into the CHS internship program, your application will be evaluated for a Rockefeller Grant.

For this option, use this budget worksheet .

2) You may apply to combine a 5 week internship in Greece with the Olympia program. With this option, you would be allowed to complete your internship a few days early in order to arrive in Olympia in time for the July 2 start date.

To do so you should complete the following application procedure: Complete the regular CHS application through CARAT. Use the budget template provided below with your application. Email the application to the CHS. Next, complete an application for the Summer School program in Olympia. The application as well as a budget template are available here .

Finally, submit an application via CARAT for a Rockefeller International Experience Grant. For your budget, you should include the program fees for the CHS internship, the program fees for the Olympia program, and the costs of travel and incidentals. For a CHS budget template, see above. Make sure to submit your application via CARAT to both the CHS and the OIP for the Rockefeller Grant. Once you are accepted into both programs you will be considered for a Rockefeller Grant.

3) You may apply to combine 5 weeks at Kenchreai (the archaeological dig) with 3 weeks in the CHS summer program in Greece. The 3 weeks in the CHS summer program would be spent either in an internship or taking a special summer course. More information on this option will be given once you are accepted to the Kenchreai dig and awarded a Rockefeller Grant.

For this option, use the following application procedure: complete a CARAT application for the Kenchreai Dig. Once you are accepted into the Kenchreai Dig you will automatically be able to stay for an additional three weeks in Greece under the auspices of the CHS should you receive a Rockefeller Grant. Use this budget template for the Kenchreai Dig plus the three-week add on. You can use the same application for the CHS and the Rockefeller Grant. Make sure to submit your application via CARAT to both the CHS and the OIP for the Rockefeller Grant.

Though CHS funding and Rockefeller funding are the two main funding options for the Summer Internship Program, the number of students who receive these scholarships is limited. Some other funding sources that you might want to consider are listed below.
