For October’s Book Club, we will be reading selections from Greek and Roman Actors: Aspects of an Ancient Profession, edited by Pat Easterling and Edith Hall, which will provide the opportunity to read different perspectives about various aspects of theatrical performance in ancient Greece.
Our suggested readings are:
- Chapter 1: “The singing actors of antiquity” by Edith Hall
- Chapter 6: “Looking for the actor’s art in Aristotle” by G.M. Sifakis
- Chapter 7: “Acting, action and words in New Comedy” by Eric Handley
- Chapter 12: “Images of performance: new evidence from Ephesus” by Charlotte Roueché
You are, of course, welcome to read any additional chapters that interest you!
The book is available free online at Edith Hall’s official website. (Please note that in the online display, the first page of the book is blank.)

You can choose to read in a full-screen pop-out view, from where you also have the option to download the book as a PDF.
The discussion will start and continue in the Kosmos forum, and we will meet online on Tuesday, October 29 at 6 a.m. EDT and 11 a.m. EDT.
Happy readings!
