Course Planning and Faculty Development
Dates: June 10-20, 2016
Every June the Sunoikisis faculty gather at the Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) in Washington, D.C. to develop the upcoming fall semester courses. They hold two 4-day planning seminars, one for the Greek course and another for the Latin course, in order to develop the course syllabi. The 2016 courses will emphasize team-teaching. All participants will receive a stipend.
The application deadline for faculty is February 1, 2016.
Participation in each seminar will be limited to twelve faculty members. The seminar will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the following priorities:
- Those who will be offering the course for undergraduates at their institutions in the fall of 2016 will receive priority.
- Second priority will go to new faculty members, i.e., those who are emerging from graduate programs to take up their first teaching posts.
- Those who have never attended a seminar sponsored by Sunoikisis will receive third priority.
Participating faculty members may nominate up to two students for an internship at the CHS; the CHS will then select two interns to assist in running each of the Sunoikisis course-planning and faculty-development seminars. If you wish to nominate students for this internship, please do so on your application.
Sunoikisis Internship
Dates: June 6-26, 2016
The interns will receive a stipend and will reside on the CHS campus from June 6-26. Some responsibilities will necessarily extend into the weeks preceding the seminars.
The interns’ responsibilities will include:
- Helping to assemble materials for the seminars, which may include scanning and uploading documents, creating and editing content on the websites, communicating with faculty participants and ensuring online access to resources; conducting research and preparing to contribute to conversations concerning the design of the courses
- Assisting with logistical arrangements that pertain to accommodations and meals for the participants, taking notes and providing general assistance during the seminar sessions and participating in the seminar, break cleanup and dinners
- Processing videos and podcasts from the seminar sessions, helping with the preparation of teaching and research materials associated with the courses
Interested students must be nominated by a Sunoikisis faculty member who will attend the 2016 course development seminar. Students who wish to serve as an intern should consult with their Sunoikisis faculty members and notify them of their interest.
Once the CHS receives the nomination, a programs coordinator will contact the student with a link to an online application. The application deadline for students is March 1, 2016.
