Salvete! The members of the Center for Hellenic Studies would like to express their thanks and appreciation to all the participants in the 2014 Sunoikisis Latin Course Development Seminar. It was a pleasure to watch as participants created a course that will no doubt challenge and inspire students this coming fall.
This year we were pleased to have 16 professors from across the country join us for this summer’s Latin Literature of the Late Republic Seminar. The seminar began with Prof. Amy Singer (Franklin & Marshall College) presenting her assessment of the previous year’s course. She used the assessment to lead a discussion of the course’s goals. During the next course, participants will use that information to improve the weekly inter-institutional common sessions.
Through enthusiastic discussion, participants explored the possibilities for their course this coming fall. Topics discussed included: historical context, prose and poetry, women in power, Roman religion, politics, and philosophy. By the seminar’s end, participants had pieced together a schedule for the semester made up of lectures and readings that addresses the previous topics and explores the works of Lucretius, Catullus, Cicero, and others.
Students in the Latin Literature of the Late Republic course will look at not only works in translation, but works in their original Latin as well. All involved institutions will participate in a weekly common session that will take place on Tuesday nights at 7–8pm (EST) via Google Hangouts. Each common session will feature a discussion led by a participating professor and will utilize secondary scholarship from the course.
We would like to give a special thank you to Prof. Corey Brennan from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, for serving as this year’s Latin course consultant. We would also like to thank our very own Prof. Ryan Fowler, CHS Sunoikisis Fellow in Curricular Development, for serving as our course director.
The following professors were in attendance: Ronnie Ancona (Hunter College and CUNY Graduate Center), Monica Berti (University of Leipzig), Corey Brennan (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), Ben DeSmidt (Carthage College), Ryan Fowler (CHS Sunoikisis Fellow in Curricular Development), Heather Gruber (Concordia College), Ben Hicks (Southwestern University), Julie Langford (University of South Florida), Molly Pasco-Pranger (University of Mississippi), Danilo Piana (Johns Hopkins University), Joe Romero (University of Mary Washington), Lindsay Samson (Agnes Scott College), Susan Satterfield (Rhodes College), Amy Singer (Franklin & Marshall College), Heather Vincent (Eckerd College), and Bryce Walker (Sweet Briar College).
