Visiting scholar at CHS | Edmund Richardson, Lecturer at Durham University

October 19-25, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 10.24.05 AMThis week, Dr. Edmund Richardson, lecturer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University, will be staying at the CHS and using the library. Currently, Richardson is working on completing his second monograph, Alexandrias: Misdirection and the Making of History. Using 19th and 20th century source work on Alexander the Great and the cities he founded during his career, from Egypt to Afghanistan, Richardson argues that narratives, even when fabricated or falsified, can provide positive understanding and act as a catalyst to the discovery of truth. While at the CHS, Richardson plans to take full advantage of our libraries collection that would be otherwise difficult to access; furthermore, he also looks forward to visiting the Library of Congress, as it holds rare books and periodicals relating to American Spiritualism and it’s fascination with Alexandria; Lastly, Richardson looks forward to engaging in scholarly discussion with other colleagues at the center, an action he believes to be “one of the drivers of truly original scholarship.”
Dr. Edmund Richardson is visiting under a grant, awarded to scholars around the world that could benefit from access to the Center’s library resources and from consulting and working with fellows on a short-term basis. The CHS is currently accepting applications for visits from August 31st to December 18th, 2015. To learn more, visit the CHS website.
