The evidence for the existence of a "Promakhos" iconograpic type that is both distinct but in actuality indistinguishable from the Palladium is extremely weak. The epiteth is occasionally applied to Athena in late antique sources and the earliest mention in reference to the staue by Phidias is in a scholion of unknown date on Demosthenes Contra Androtiones 13 found in a 10th century manuscript (Claire Cullen Davison and Birte Lundgreen 2009. "The Name of the Statue.' In Pheidias – The Sculptures & Ancient Sources, ed. Geoffrey B. Waywell, 280-282. Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies, University of London Supplement 105 1).
